Robert Graves was an English poet, translator, and novelist, celebrated as a prominent literary figure in the 20th century. He gained international acclaim with his 1929 memoir of the First World War, 'Good-bye to All That.' After serving in World War I and studying at Oxford on a classical scholarship, he became the first professor of English at the University of Cairo. He is best known for his novels about the Roman emperor Claudius and his works on mythology, including 'The White Goddess.'
