My teenage years were not great. Forced to move away from the only world I knew, including Martin, my first love, nearly did me in. In order to deal with all the pain and grief, I drowned myself in drugs.

When Martin showed up again, it triggered all those issues I thought I’d worked through. As a recovering addict, seeing that same pain reflected in another was hard, seeing it in Martin was absolutely gut-wrenching. I still loved him, but I couldn’t have that in my life.

I couldn’t let him waltz back in like we’d never been apart. Everything was different now. I was different…

My life may be nothing more than paint on a canvas, but it was mine and I was the one in control now.
