I’m sure you’ve seen them. Elves, orcs, trolls, centaurs. You name it, they exist. All with their strengths and weaknesses. Magic. Long lives.

I’m a rookie human in a world where the elves are the pinnacle of fighters and aggression. The only being routinely more powerful is a sorcerer. Once a wand comes into play, all bets are off. You can barely arrest an elf for breaking a law. A sorcerer? Let’s just say that it tends to take one to beat one, and even attempting to arrest one often results in deaths. Deaths that the sorcerer isn’t even charged with.

I’m a magicless human in a role that puts me front and center against those that are more powerful than I am. Except I’ve been tasked with guarding a magical site and to stop any fights from breaking out around it.

What do you do when two master fighters decide to break the rules and fight where they’re not allowed? If you’re me, you step in and try to stop them. And then you pay the price for being the weak link, the human, in the mix. The person the powers that be can go after with impunity. I’ve dreamt of being a cop for so long, yet two elves decide their fight takes precedence over pesky things like laws.

When the grinding gears of justice pull me in, it’s up to me to fight for myself. To save my reputation. My apartment. My life. My found family. Can I do it? We’ll see. After all, it’s one shorter than average human against more magic and might than I have any right standing against.

That’s okay. I’m up to the challenge, it’s time to stand up for myself.
