Emma World
“I always deserve the best treatment because I never put up with any other.”
In Austen’s own words, Emma Woodhouse is handsome, clever, and rich, with a comfortable home and a happy disposition. She has no interest or inclination of love but strongly believes in her match-making abilities. Determined to prove her skills, she will attempt to find the perfect man for her new friend Harriet. Using her charm and wits, she will do everything in her power to bring the couple together, only to have it backfire spectacularly when Mr. Elton proposes to her instead of her friend.
Undeterred, Emma soon sets her sights on Mr. Churchill and Lady Fairfax. When her efforts come up short, she learns that she shouldn’t be meddling in other people’s affairs the hard way. However, she gains something even more valuable in the process; the love of her trusted friend, Mr. Knightley. He has criticized her and even attempted to stop her match-making efforts, but in the end, he can’t help but fall for her endearing qualities.
Emma is the last novel to be published in Austen’s lifetime in 1815 and is the quintessential comedy of manners. Like any Austenian novel, it criticizes the upper echelons of Regency England in the most hilarious, yet poignant way.
