Alina Starkov knew only one thing about herself. She was just plain…ordinary, following her best friend Mal to the end of the world. Joining the regiments of the once-great Ravka, however, Alina is faced with the greatest of challenges: crossing the Shadow Fold, a veil of darkness and death dividing Ravka in two. For a mere cartographer as Alina without a drop of magic in her blood like the revered Grisha, crossing the Fold means almost certain death. 

But the perilous crossing reveals a power within Alina that was thought long gone. Now, her future looks nothing like she ever imagined, and with the future of Ravka in her hands, the dark and mysterious Darkling has taken an interest in her that could raise her to the heavens, or damn her to hell.
