About

Babel, by R. F. Kuang, explores the interplay of language, translation, and power through the story of Robin Swift, an orphan from Canton who is brought to London by Professor Lovell. Trained in Latin, Ancient Greek, and Chinese, Robin prepares to join Oxford University’s Royal Institute of Translation, known as Babel, which is the epicenter of translation and magical silver working. This technique, using enchanted silver bars, enhances the British Empire's dominance. However, as Robin advances in his education, he faces a moral dilemma between supporting Babel and his own conscience concerning the imperialistic motives of Britain, especially during an unjust war with China. This leads him to question whether change can truly be initiated from within institutions or if it necessitates external revolution.
