Kiki, the main character, is real hoot. She,s a young widowed mother of a teenager daughter, who never finished college and has never had a job-until now! The books have the underlying theme of her husband's murder and the funky detective who's working the case. Lot's of fun characters, pets and murders! Can't wait to read the next one! When I find one I like, I read everything they've written in one great gulp, and then get perturbed that they don't write any faster!!I discovered the Cara Mia stories in a Happy Homicides short story collection. I really like this series. Fun characters, interesting location, and a bit of a twist at the end. I read cozy mysteries more for the characters and the setting than the mystery itself, and this book with its good plot and engaging characters really drew me in. Plus, there was a plausible reason for Cara to be involved in the investigation, something often lacking in cozy mysteries. I also learned something new which I always like - I had never heard of the Florida Highwaymen painters until I read this book. I looked them up on the internet - they painted some really beautiful landscapes.I'll definitely read more by this author. Catherine Fritts ~ Fun & Entertaining! Whatever this poor girl did in a past life, it sure caught up with her in this story. Charming story with detailed descriptions of each character brought to life with Ms Slan's writing. Colorful personalities abound making for a wonderful and fun experience. Darn the ending though, I need to read book 2 for an answer left hanging at the end.
