About

Nineteen Eighty-Four is a dystopian social science fiction novel and cautionary tale. Published on 8 June 1949, it was Orwell's ninth and final book completed in his lifetime. The novel is set in a future world of 1984, portraying a totalitarian regime in Great Britain, now named Airstrip One, part of the wider superstate called Oceania. The society is governed by Big Brother, a dictatorial leader who is upheld by an intense cult of personality and maintained through the Party's omnipresent surveillance and the Thought Police. The book explores themes of totalitarianism, mass surveillance, and the manipulation of truth and facts in society, drawing parallels to Stalinist Russia and Nazi Germany.
