About

The Count of Monte Cristo is an adventure novel by French author Alexandre Dumas, completed in 1844. It is set in France, Italy, and the Mediterranean islands during the 1815–1839 period, capturing the historical essence of the Bourbon Restoration and the era of Louis-Philippe of France. The novel begins as Napoleon escapes from Elba, marking the start of the Hundred Days of his reign. The story follows Edmond Dantès, a young first mate who is wrongfully imprisoned on charges of treason. In prison, he meets Abbé Faria, who reveals that Dantès's romantic rival, Fernand Mondego, along with his envious crewmate Danglars and corrupt magistrate De Villefort, framed him. Faria educates Dantès and shares knowledge of a hidden treasure. After Faria's death, Dantès escapes, discovers the treasure, and re-emerges into society as the wealthy Count of Monte Cristo. His new identity allows him to seek justice and retribution against those who wronged him, exploring themes of hope, justice, vengeance, mercy, and forgiveness.
