A burgeoning epic fantasy in a stunning new world.
I really did not know what to expect from this book. I had no expectations and no idea of what the story was about aside from Fantasy, which is definitely one of my favourite genres.
Firstly, I'd like to give this book a 5, and here are my reasons why.
Shawn has built a very in depth world with complex storylines that are reminiscent of Tolkien, but with the pacing of a Matthew Reilly novel. He uses third person, multiple POV within this world so readers can follow the many concurrent stories that follow the main characters as they roll from one disaster to another on their way to the Big Epic Ending he no doubt has planned in the sequels, and he does it very well.
The characters are well-rounded and believable in their plights - rumour has it some of BookTok has fallen in love with one in particular but no spoilers here!
There is great visual detail in the battle scenes and several nice little plot twists that will leave readers blinking at the page thinking 'how DARE you!'.
The Cruelty of Magic is a great read if you like epic fantasy, fast pacing and want to lose yourself in a rich, detailed world.
