Chilling
Marie Crow is easily my newest favourite zombie writer, as she not only delivers a chilling story every time, but also a memorable one with complex characters that will make you care about their fate. Her writing style describes an Apocolyptic world in such a manner that really pulls you in so you can see and experience everything. Most scary books and movies can't get a squeak out of me, but this one is the exception, and the one I don't read at night.
Back to spooky and scary, back to horror...
As a first novel in this series, it definitely sets the stage, and the bar, for the next. Not your usual zombie novel with some romance thrown in, The Risen: Dawning, has brought the origins of zombies back to the beginning - back to spooky and scary, back to horror.
Marie F. Crow has spun a very entrancing and detailed tale that had shivers running down my spine mingled with my gasps and inability to stop my fingers from turning the next page.
With zombies becoming so mainstream, I was wary picking up this novel, unsure of what I was getting myself into - I was hooked right from the start and the mix of horror and humor were a pleasant surprise.
Helena Hawthorn is a strong main character who weaves a mesmerizing tale as she goes from biker bar to apocalypse.
Very descriptive, I didn’t have any trouble playing the story out in my head. Crow has the ability to sway a reader with her impeccable vocabulary creating imagery like no other. An author on the move and definitely one to look out for.
A Good, Scary Story
It's been a while since a book actually scared me but this one really did give me the creeps. Don't expect the fantastical and fairytale version of the undead that we've seen in recent films. This a true horror story, much more like the classics.
The characters are well written and as it's written in first person I quickly became invested in Helena's journey. The author uses a lot of description which, although not always a positive, in this genre seems to fit well. She sets the scenes and writes an interesting back story rather than a quick slasher book. She also tackles how the characters cope in an apocalyptic world, struggling with their humanity.
I was torn between being scared and not being able to put the book down, just what a horror story should do. It frustratingly ends on a cliffhanger so I hope there's more to come from Marie Crow.
Edge. Passion. Connection
It is impossible to read this book and not feel the connection in your own being. The collisions of the various cultures that Helena is a part of are all edgy and scary yet inviting. As a reader you are taken on multiple journeys all filled with emotion and elements of reality which are extracted by the vivid actions of the underworld. Marie Crow does a fantastic job of making all the images and emotional exchanges deep and compelling whether it is between Lawless, Aimes, Chapel, JD and Helena or those more personal between Helena, Conroy, Ashley and Lilly. There is so much that one can relate to even though the action in the book is fast, erratic and in some cases a conundrum of conflicting emotions. One cannot but feel a range of positive emotions for all the main characters in the story, even the Risen who unleash their venom and wrath on so many unsuspecting victims. The loss of Lilly may be, for many, the hardest thing to swallow in the book. It is easy to become the emotional victim of the loss of a child, especially in the circumstance of the relationship with Carol. That said, it is also easy to reengage to with the action to push all ones support behind Helena hoping that she will not only outwit and outlast the Risen but also maintain the key relationships that feed her energy and sense of purpose.
This is not my favorite genre however that had little impact on the interest maintained to read this book which speaks to the literary skills of the author. By the end I was a convert to the aura and powerful imagery of the genre when skillfully constructed. There is no questioning the creative genius of the author in not only creating the plots but also the execution of the vivid expressions which capture the mind and fuel the desire for more. The fact that the story gets so personal to me as a reader is solely to the credit of the author. Marie Crow is clearly a master at this craft which will result in appeal from readers at all points on the zombiesphere spectrum.
Will haunt you after the last page
If you're looking for a great zombie read, 'The Risen: Remnants' has all that you're looking for. From the perspective of the mother of a teenage girl, Marie Crow makes you feel as if you're there and living every terrifying moment as the world they once knew falls further and further into despair and darkness. This is a must-have book for horror fans that will continue to haunt you after the last page.
had me gripped!!!
I need to know what happens to these characters now!
Well written, lovely descriptive language, and well thought out characters. I related to Helena and her emotional struggles.
Made me laugh, made me cry, and made me have to sleep with the light on!!!!
Could have done with more careful/professional editing, but most of the mistakes I noticed were simple grammatical errors and didn't spoil the book at all.
Excellent!
